Architecture is both a scraping down and building up. It is a moment captured in time, both camouflaging the ground on which it stands, and being camouflaged by a network of social, environmental, and political intentions. Beneath is a tonal foundation of underpainting, through which forensic investigation reveals the unconscious of the public and the history of the site. Above is the unanticipated intervention of overpainting, by which formal mediations either suppress or celebrate the public.
Located on the grounds of the first public housing project in Historic Charleston, South Carolina, this thesis seeks to find fault in a dark history of camouflage by operating in the space of between; a third layer in the buildup referred to as (in)painting. Most commonly used to describe the art practice technique of repairing images, this project redefines (in)painting through the raster based tools of designers. By both content-ing awareness and aware-ing content, a new typology is produced that formally acts against the “historic sign goes here" of early-colonial cities and programmatically repairs a historically marginalized community.
